Cecil and his brother Godwill were abandoned by their mother shortly after the death of their father when they were still infants. They are being cared for by their grandmother who lives in a very rural area. There are no good public schools these boys can attend and she can not afford to provide them with a better education. These boys are so bright! They have learned very good English despite missing so much school.
